ABOUT Leathers
Berkline offers several types of leathers:
Pigmented: This is an average basic leather that is dyed and processed to remove most of the natural defects found in the leather.
NuBuck: This is a sanded surface leather that is dyed. The sanding is to give the leather the soft weathered look and feel.
Semi-Aniline: Best Leather offered and only topped by a pure aniline leather. Leathers which have been aniline dyed, then finished to matching surface pigments to even out the color. Also called "aniline plus." Generally used for commercial and heavy-use residential leather application. These leathers are light resistant and scratch resistant and easily cleaned. Generally from the top 10 - 15% of the world hide supply after Pure Aniline.
Pure Aniline: (Not Offered) This leather should have absolutely no top finish of any sort added to the leather. Generally impractical for upholstery leather. Pure aniline leather marketed to and in the US generally means that the leather is selected from the top 5% of the hides and there are no additional color-altering materials added to the surface, while clear wax, oil or other other minimal protective finishes are applied either in the drum or to the surface of leather to offer some protection against liquids and air-borne dust. All of the natural markings such as wrinkles, fat lines, healed bug bites, different absorption levels of the dye to these and other natural characteristics are clearly visible.
Composite Leather:
So what is Composite Leather?? Composite Leather, also known as Bonded Leather, looks and feels like the genuine leather but has the advantage of being durable, long-lasting, and resistant to abrasions and moisture. Composite Leathers are typically tannery made using the same equipment as genuine leather. Composite leather is a composition of leather scraps that are ground into shreds which are then typically combined with natural rubber, water and a bonding agent to form a uniformly thick and durable material. Composite Leather is used on many products: furniture, shoes, handbags and most notably in sporting equipment like volleyballs, basket balls, footballs etc. Vinyl and composite leather are quite different and really these two can not be compared.
ABOUT Grades and Groups
The higher the Grade or Group number the more the material costs. A higher grade or group number does not always mean that the material is better or more durable. The driving factor for the higher price is MFG costs.
